In a world obsessed with doctor and engineer titles, forgotten professions linger like lost socks in the laundry of corporate life.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do”. I don’t remember exactly where I read it but before you can love doing something, you have to know it well, right? I know that you know enough about work— at least as enough as an individual should know. But there are some jobs or professions that certainly evaded your purview of corporate or professional life.

Nomenclaturist
I can bet that you never heard about this professional. And if you literally haven’t, it’s code-red time here onwards.
This professional is employed to concoct new names intended for companies, policies, products and services. We can also call this individual a namer—someone who brainstorms to discover the would-be known names. Interesting, isn’t it?
Air traffic controller
You must have seen this professional in the movies before. This individual is responsible for communicating with the pilots using radio equipment. They also have an unremiss eye on the aircrafts flying within the range of their radar, guiding the pilots during landing and take-offs.
Patent attorney
Highly revered Mr. Thomas Edison must have had one as his crony or pal.
Because this individual is Adept at the laws ensuring the preservation of the intellectual property of an inventor.
So necessity is the mother of invention, Mr. Edison is the father of invention and the patent attorney is the friend of the inventor.
Industrial-organizational psychologist
These individuals are responsible for devising means to keep the employees working in an organisation productive and content. They monitor the behaviour of the employees and identify the environmental lacuna to fill them with needed psychological stimuli for the augmentation of the overall work environment.
Attention engineer
You must have heard the facts about why YouTube’s icon is painted red, and why some social media platforms have certain enticing or luring techniques algorithmized in their notifications. These are the professionals who are at work behind the ubiquitous acceptance, influence and dominance of social media. They analyse the data to know the preferences and dislikes of the populace and eventually help the giant companies make data-driven decisions regarding their upcoming advancements, services or updations etc. Attention engineers can capablize these companies of influencing your emotions, thus occasionally even enabling them to manipulate your opinions.
Au pair
For most of my readers, this might be an alien concept. An au pair refers to working as a temporary family member of a nuclear family(which consists of only children and only their parents) or a joint family. It can also be deemed as an internship, as I call it, so that you might have a feel of how things work in a family. An au pair’s responsibilities may encompass casual household chores—like the lighter ones— and most importantly taking care of the children of your host family. In return, one might expect a weekly or something daily stipend.
Housesitter
You of course know what babysitting is. I am not kidding it’s literally like babysitting. house-sitting entails taking care of the house and also sometimes the pets of the owner who might be going to be off for a vacation for some time. It’s not actually a permanent job. It requires you to work for a couple of weeks only. Most often you don’t get paid but yes! you get free accommodation for some time and it’s a great opportunity for travellers or padestrians like me. Also, it allows you to get along with the people around you.
Professional Cuddler
It too may sound strange to some people but this profession does exist my dear friend. A professional cuddler is supposed to heal people using cuddling therapy, which might also include platonic touch and companionship. Just like smiles, hugs also help individuals generally suffering from mental illnesses heal. In an era dominated by technology, we actually need it to assuage stress and depression.
Sommelier
Another strange-looking noun is here to describe another profession. A sommelier is familiar with all aspects of wine service. They are meant to help customers select appropriate wines for their desired meals. Besides serving, they take care to store and preserve wines swimmingly, keeping in mind the well-established standards and considering factors such as wine style, region, vintage, and price point to offer a diverse and well-balanced selection.
Professional Sleeper
Ever wondered that one could earn by just sleeping? Yes! it’s true. A professional Sleeper is saddled with the responsibilities of mattress testing, bedding evaluation and feedback while keeping in mind such factors as mattress design, pressure relief, motion transfer, breathability, sleep quality and comfort. It might sound like a plain and straightforward job but trust me it’s not for everyone. To be able to make a career out of sleeping, which is just like dreaming without sleeping, one has to have skills like sleep expertise, understanding of sleep science, meticulousness about details etc.
It should be enough for today, don’t forget to leave below your lovely comments telling us your opinion about this blog and any topic you would like to read a blog about. And see you in my next blog.
Sweet dreams for now!
